1984 was the year we first wore stone washed jeans.  Mary Lou Retton scored a perfect "10" in gymnastics at the Olympics.  George Orwell's "1984" was re-released in hardback and topped the best seller list for most of the year.  Barbara Mandrell was involved in a near fatal car accident.  On television we first watched Miami Vice and were introduced to the Huxtables on The Cosby Show.  At the movies we saw the first "PG-13" rating.  The Supreme Court ruled that home video taping did not violate copyright laws.  We said goodbye to Marvin Gaye and Ethel Merman.  Band Aid released the song "Do They Know It's Christmas" to raise money for African famine relief.  The Who and The Go Go's called it quits while Michael Jackson and his brothers teamed up for the Victory tour.  A then unknown Courtney Cox was seen in Bruce Springsteen's video for "Dancing In the Dark".  On January 10, we first heard Clara Peller ask "Where's the beef?" At the Grammy's, Best Vocal Performance-Female went to Tina Turner for her first #1 hit "What's Love Got To Do With It", Best Vocal Performance-Male went to Phil Collins for "Against All Odds", Best New Artist was awarded to Cyndi Lauper and Weird Al Yankovic won Best Comedy Performance for "Eat It".
